What Are Silverfish?
Silverfish is a small insect without wings. Their lifespan is two to eight years typically. Their name come from the silver color and their way of wiggling. They do have a long antenna and are not bigger than ¾ of an inch.
Does Silverfish Bite?
Silverfish do not bite. Though they have a creepy appearance they are mostly harmless and do not bite. They do not carry any disease and do not pose a threat to other animals and humans. They eat starchy food. You can find silverfish inside an open flour container and other dry foods. They also eat old fabric, cardboard, paper and glue.
Where Can You Find Silverfish? What Damage They Do?
Generally, silverfish live in dark and damp places. They live in bathrooms or kitchens, garages, attics and bathrooms. You can find their nesting place and look at the damp places for tiny black droppings and empty shells or shed skin.
If your old clothes have small holes or yellow stains as silverfish eat wool, silk, cotton or rayon-based fabrics. Silverfish eat paper products, they are a threat to books, papers and cloths.
Silverfish Sources
Silverfish stays in places that are out of sight and they can find their favorite food. They are found often outdoors under rocks and tree logs or piles of leaves. If you search for silverfish in your home, look around the places where food sources are available like sugar, carbohydrates, books, papers glue etc.
Silverfish enter the buildings through tiny openings. The gaps around the doors, wall cracks, torn and unrepaired screens allow them to enter the building. As well as transporting boxes, containers, crates that were kept in the infested areas are other ways of silverfish entrance.
Since they do not bite and stay secluded and has a small size, they are often unnoticed. The females lay 50 eggs at a time and it spreads the insect faster.
Eliminate Silverfish
Eliminate storing foods for a long time like cereals, baked goods, meat and similar products.
Clean carpets, furniture, drapes, linens frequently.
Use a dehumidifier for moisture removal.
Do not keep wet leaves, paper on your yard.
